Ramadan

🔊 Pronunciation: ra-ma-DAAN

The ninth month of the Islamic calendar, during which Muslims fast from dawn to sunset.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and is considered the holiest month in Islam. It commemorates the first revelation of the Holy Quran to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) through the Angel Jibreel (Gabriel). During this blessed month, Muslims around the world fast from dawn (Suhoor) to sunset (Iftar), abstaining from food, drink, smoking, and intimate relations.

The Spiritual Significance of Ramadan

Fasting in Ramadan is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, making it obligatory for every able adult Muslim. The purpose extends far beyond physical abstinence — it is a time of deep spiritual reflection, increased devotion, and heightened awareness of those less fortunate. Allah says in the Quran: "O you who believe, fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may attain Taqwa (God-consciousness)." (Quran 2:183)

Key Practices During Ramadan

Beyond fasting, Ramadan is characterised by increased acts of worship:

  • Tarawih prayers — Special night prayers performed after Isha during Ramadan
  • Quran recitation — Many Muslims aim to complete the entire Quran during the month
  • Charity — Generosity is multiplied, with many choosing to pay their Zakat and Sadaqah during Ramadan
  • Itikaf — Spiritual retreat in the mosque during the last ten days

Laylatul Qadr — The Crown of Ramadan

The most significant night of Ramadan is Laylatul Qadr (the Night of Power), which falls in the last ten nights. The Quran describes it as "better than a thousand months" (Quran 97:3), meaning worship and charity on this single night earns rewards equivalent to over 83 years of worship.

Ramadan and Charity

The Prophet (peace be upon him) was the most generous of all people, and he was at his most generous during Ramadan. Following this example, Muslims increase their charitable giving significantly during this month. Common forms include food packs for families in need, iftar meals for those breaking their fast, and Zakat payments to purify one's wealth.

When Is Ramadan 2026?

Ramadan 2026 is expected to begin on Tuesday 17th February 2026 in the UK, with Eid ul-Fitr falling around Thursday 19th March 2026.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: When Ramadan begins, the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained. (Bukhari and Muslim)
