Sadaqah Jariyah

🔊 Pronunciation: sa-DA-qa JAA-ri-ya

Ongoing charity that continues to benefit people long after the initial act.

Sadaqah Jariyah (ongoing charity) is one of the most powerful concepts in Islamic philanthropy. Unlike regular Sadaqah which provides immediate, one-time benefit, Sadaqah Jariyah creates a lasting, continuous benefit that keeps generating rewards for the donor — even after death.

The Three Deeds That Never End

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "When a person dies, their deeds come to an end except for three: Sadaqah Jariyah, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for them." (Muslim)

Of these three, Sadaqah Jariyah is the one most accessible to every Muslim. You do not need to be a scholar or a parent — anyone can give ongoing charity.

Best Examples of Sadaqah Jariyah

1. Water Wells & Bore Holes

A water well serves hundreds of people for 15-20 years. Every drink of water, every crop irrigated, every ablution performed earns you continuous rewards. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was asked which charity is best and replied: "Providing water."

2. Building a Masjid

Every prayer performed in your built masjid, every Quran lesson taught, every community gathering hosted — all generate ongoing rewards for as long as the building stands.

3. Quran Distribution

Every verse recited from a Quran you donated earns you reward — for as long as the copy exists and is read.

4. Orphan Education

Educating an orphan creates beneficial knowledge they carry for life — and pass on to others. The ripple effect of education is immeasurable.

Sadaqah Jariyah for the Deceased

One of the most beloved practices is giving Sadaqah Jariyah on behalf of deceased loved ones. Building a well, planting a tree, or contributing to a mosque in their name ensures rewards continue reaching them in the grave. This is highly encouraged in Islam and brings comfort to both the donor and the departed.
