Zakat Calculation 2026: A Complete UK Guide
Calculating Zakat correctly is a fundamental obligation. This guide covers the 2026 Nisab threshold and calculation methods.
Zakat is one of the Five Pillars of Islam — an obligation upon every Muslim whose wealth exceeds the Nisab threshold. This guide explains exactly how to calculate your Zakat for 2026.
What Is the Nisab Threshold in 2026?
The Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth you must possess before Zakat becomes obligatory. It is based on the value of either:
- Gold Nisab: 87.48 grams of gold (approximately £4,800-£5,200 in 2026)
- Silver Nisab: 612.36 grams of silver (approximately £350-£450 in 2026)
Most scholars recommend using the silver Nisab as it is lower, meaning more people qualify to pay Zakat and more recipients benefit.

Zakat Distribution (Cash) →Step-by-Step Zakat Calculation
Step 1: Calculate Your Zakatable Assets
Add up the following:
- Cash in bank accounts and at home
- Gold and silver (including jewellery worn regularly — according to the Hanafi school)
- Shares and investments at market value
- Money owed to you (that you expect to receive)
- Business stock and inventory
- Rental income received
Step 2: Subtract Your Liabilities
- Personal debts due within the year
- Business expenses due
- Outstanding bills
Step 3: Check Against Nisab
If your net assets exceed the Nisab and you have held this wealth for one lunar year (hawl), you owe Zakat.
Step 4: Pay 2.5%
Multiply your net Zakatable assets by 0.025 (2.5%). This is your Zakat amount.
Example Calculation
Savings: £15,000 + Gold jewellery: £3,000 + Investments: £5,000 = £23,000
Less debts: £2,000
Net Zakatable: £21,000
Zakat due: £21,000 × 2.5% = £525
