Laylatul Qadr Guide: What It Is and How to Seek It
Laylatul Qadr is better than a thousand months. Here is how to maximise worship and giving in the last nights of Ramadan.
Laylatul Qadr — the Night of Power — is the most blessed night of the entire year. The Quran describes it as "better than a thousand months" (Surah Al-Qadr, 97:3). Any worship or charity given on this night is worth more than 83 years of continuous worship.
When Is Laylatul Qadr?
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Seek Laylatul Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan." (Bukhari)
The most commonly cited night is the 27th night of Ramadan, but it could fall on any odd night: the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, or 29th. This is why many Muslims intensify worship throughout all ten nights.
Signs of Laylatul Qadr
According to various hadith, signs include:
- A calm, peaceful night — neither too hot nor too cold
- The moon resembles half a plate
- The sun rises without strong rays the following morning
- A feeling of tranquillity and spiritual elevation
How to Maximise Laylatul Qadr
- Increase your prayers — Perform Tahajjud, Tarawih, and extra nawafil
- Recite Quran abundantly
- Make abundant dua — especially the dua taught by the Prophet: "Allahumma innaka afuwwun tuhibbul afwa fa'fu anni"
- Give charity — A donation on Laylatul Qadr is worth 83+ years of giving
- Perform I'tikaf — Seclusion in the mosque during the last ten days
