Fidya vs Kaffarah: What is the Difference?
Fidya supports those who cannot fast long-term, while Kaffarah is expiation for intentionally breaking a fast.
Both Fidya and Kaffarah are related to fasting in Ramadan, but they apply in very different circumstances. Understanding the difference is essential for fulfilling your obligations correctly.
What Is Fidya?
Fidya is a charitable compensation paid by those who cannot fast due to valid, long-term reasons such as:
- Chronic illness that makes fasting dangerous
- Old age and physical inability
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding (if making up fasts later is not possible)
Amount: Feed one poor person for each day missed — approximately £5 per day, or £150 for the whole month.
What Is Kaffarah?
Kaffarah is a more severe penalty required when someone deliberately breaks a fast without a valid excuse. This applies to intentional eating, drinking, or intimate relations during fasting hours.
Amount: Fast for 60 consecutive days for each fast deliberately broken, OR feed 60 poor people — approximately £300 per day broken.

| Reason | Cannot fast (valid excuse) | Deliberately broke fast |
