Understanding Aqeeqah and the Animal Sacrifice

Aqeeqah & Animal Sacrifice

Aqeeqah and Animal Sacrifice both involve the act of sacrificing livestock, but with different intentions. Aqeeqah is specifically for celebrating the birth of a child, following the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), while Animal Sacrifice (such as Sadaqah sacrifice) is a voluntary act done at any time to seek closeness to Allah, blessings, and rewards. Both sacrifices offer immense rewards and help the poor by distributing meat to those in need.

Importance of Aqeeqah

What is Aqeeqah?

Aqeeqah is a form of gratitude for the birth of a child, performed by sacrificing two goats/sheep for a boy and one goat/sheep for a girl, preferably on the seventh day after birth.

"Every baby is held in pledge up to his aqeeqah. So, on his seventh day, sacrifice should be made on his behalf, his head should be shaved, and he should be given a name."
(Abu Dawud)

It’s a highly recommended Sunnah that also serves as a way to provide fresh meat to needy families, sharing the joy of new life with the less fortunate.

How Aqeeqah Helps the Needy

The meat is distributed among the most vulnerable and needy, ensuring they receive fresh, high-quality food. For many, this may be one of the few opportunities to eat meat throughout the year.

Meaning and Purpose of Animal Sacrifice

What is Animal Sacrifice?

Unlike Aqeeqah, Animal Sacrifice can be performed at any time of the year for various reasons like seeking Allah’s protection, blessings, or expiation of sins.

"Sadaqah extinguishes sin as water extinguishes fire."
(Abu Dawud)

The act of sacrificing an animal and donating its meat to the needy not only brings spiritual rewards but also provides nourishment for those who might otherwise go without.
