Sadaqah Jariyah: The Complete Guide to Ongoing Charity
Sadaqah Jariyah is ongoing charity that continues to earn rewards long after you give. Learn the best ways to give.
Sadaqah Jariyah — ongoing charity — is one of only three deeds that continue to benefit a Muslim after death. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "When a person dies, their deeds come to an end except for three: Sadaqah Jariyah, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for them." (Muslim)
What Makes Charity "Jariyah" (Ongoing)?
For charity to be considered Jariyah, it must create a lasting benefit that continues beyond the initial act. A one-off food pack, while immensely valuable, is not Jariyah because it is consumed. A water well, however, provides clean water for 15-20 years — generating continuous rewards the entire time.
Best Examples of Sadaqah Jariyah
1. Building a Water Well
The Prophet (peace be upon him) was asked which charity is best. He replied: "Providing water." A water well serves hundreds of people for decades.
2. Building a Masjid
Every prayer performed, every Quran lesson taught, every community iftar hosted in your built masjid earns you ongoing rewards.
3. Distributing the Quran
Every verse recited from a Quran you donated earns you reward — for as long as the copy exists.
4. Sponsoring an Orphan's Education
Knowledge given to an orphan becomes beneficial knowledge they carry for life — and pass on to others.
Sadaqah Jariyah on Behalf of the Deceased
One of the most common practices is giving Sadaqah Jariyah on behalf of deceased parents, spouses, or relatives. This is highly encouraged in Islam and benefits both the donor and the deceased.
