Why This Matters

Fidya is the compensation paid by a Muslim who is unable to fast during Ramadan due to a valid, long-term reason such as chronic illness, old age, pregnancy, or breastfeeding. It is not paid for temporarily missed fasts — those must be made up later (Qada).

The amount of Fidya is the cost of feeding one poor person for each missed day of fasting. According to the majority of scholars, this equates to approximately £5 per day in the UK.

Who Must Pay Fidya?

  • Those with chronic illness that prevents fasting permanently
  • Elderly individuals who cannot endure fasting
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women (according to some scholars)
  • Those with terminal illness or conditions requiring daily medication with food

How Fidya Is Calculated

Fidya = number of missed days × cost of feeding one person. For a full month of 30 days: 30 × £5 = £150.

Your Fidya donation is used to provide meals to those in need across our operational countries, ensuring your obligation is fulfilled while feeding the hungry.

Allah says in the Quran: "And upon those who are able [to fast, but with hardship] — a ransom [as substitute] of feeding a poor person [each day]." (Al-Baqarah 2:184)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Fidya?+
Fidya is compensation for missing fasts when you are permanently unable to fast due to chronic illness, old age, or similar long-term conditions. It involves feeding one poor person per missed day.
How much is Fidya per day?+
Fidya is approximately £5 per day, which covers the cost of two meals (or one full day of food) for a person in need.
Can I pay Fidya for the whole month at once?+
Yes, you can pay for all 30 days in advance: 30 × £5 = £150. This ensures your full obligation is covered.
What is the difference between Fidya and Kaffarah?+
Fidya is for those who cannot fast at all. Kaffarah is expiation for deliberately breaking a fast without valid excuse — it requires feeding 60 people (£300) or fasting 60 consecutive days.
