Why This Matters
Fitrana (also known as Zakat al-Fitr or Sadaqat al-Fitr) is an obligatory charity that every Muslim must pay before the Eid al-Fitr prayer at the end of Ramadan. It serves two purposes: to purify the fasting person from any shortcomings during Ramadan, and to provide food for the poor so they can also enjoy the day of Eid.
Who Must Pay Fitrana?
Fitrana is obligatory on every Muslim who possesses food or wealth beyond their basic needs on the day of Eid. This includes:
- Adults and children — parents or guardians pay on behalf of dependants
- Those who fasted and those who did not (it is not tied to fasting)
- Anyone with surplus provisions beyond Eid day
A head of household pays Fitrana for every member of their family, including young children and elderly dependants.
How Much Is Fitrana?
The amount is traditionally one sa’ (approximately 2.5–3 kg) of staple food per person. In the UK, this is calculated as approximately £5 per person. For a family of five, that would be £25.
When to Pay
Fitrana should ideally be paid before the Eid prayer. It can be given during the last few days of Ramadan to ensure it reaches those in need on time. If paid after the Eid prayer, it counts as regular Sadaqah rather than Fitrana.
Who Receives Fitrana?
Fitrana is distributed to the poor and needy — the same categories eligible for Zakat. The primary goal is to ensure that no one goes hungry on the day of Eid. Your Fitrana is distributed through our verified partners to families in need across multiple countries.
Fitrana vs Fidya vs Kaffarah
Fitrana is obligatory on all Muslims before Eid. Fidya is compensation for those unable to fast. Kaffarah is expiation for deliberately breaking a fast. All three are distinct obligations.
