Missed Fasting Days in Ramadan: What to Do

Missed fasting days require making them up later, paying Fidya, or paying Kaffarah depending on the reason.

Missing fasting days during Ramadan happens for various reasons — illness, travel, menstruation, or pregnancy. Understanding what to do depends on why you missed and whether you can make the days up.

Valid Reasons for Missing a Fast

  • Illness — If fasting would worsen your condition or delay recovery
  • Travel — Travellers are permitted to break their fast
  • Menstruation/postnatal bleeding — Women must not fast during these times
  • Pregnancy/breastfeeding — If fasting poses a risk to mother or child
  • Old age — If fasting is genuinely harmful

Making Up Missed Fasts (Qada)

If you missed fasts due to temporary reasons (illness, travel, menstruation), you must make them up before the next Ramadan. These can be fasted on any days throughout the year — consecutively or spread out.

When Fidya Applies

If you permanently cannot fast (chronic illness, old age), you pay Fidya — approximately £5 per day missed.

When Kaffarah Applies

If you deliberately broke a fast without valid reason, you must pay Kaffarah — fasting 60 consecutive days or feeding 60 poor people per day broken.

Fulfil Your Obligation
