The Islamic obligation to care for orphans, one of the most emphasised charitable acts in the Quran and Sunnah.
Orphan sponsorship (Kafalat al-Yatim) holds one of the most exalted positions in Islamic charity. The Quran mentions orphans 23 times, and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) — himself an orphan — repeatedly emphasised the immense reward for those who care for orphaned children.
The Quranic Mandate
Allah commands the care of orphans throughout the Quran:
- "And they ask you about orphans. Say: Improvement for them is best." (Quran 2:220)
- "So as for the orphan, do not oppress [him]." (Quran 93:9)
- "Indeed, those who devour the property of orphans unjustly are only consuming fire into their bellies." (Quran 4:10)
The Prophet's Promise
The Prophet (peace be upon him) gave one of the most powerful incentives for orphan care: "I and the one who sponsors an orphan will be like these two in Paradise," and he held up his index and middle fingers together (Bukhari). Being the neighbour of the Prophet (peace be upon him) in Paradise is a reward of unimaginable magnitude.
