Expiation required for deliberately breaking a fast without valid excuse.
Kaffarah is a severe expiation required when someone deliberately breaks a Ramadan fast without a valid Islamic excuse. It is significantly more demanding than Fidya because it addresses an intentional violation of a sacred obligation.
When Is Kaffarah Required?
Kaffarah applies when a Muslim intentionally breaks their Ramadan fast through:
- Deliberately eating or drinking during fasting hours without valid excuse
- Intimate relations during fasting hours
Kaffarah does NOT apply if the fast is broken due to forgetfulness, genuine illness, or accidental consumption. In cases of forgetfulness, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "If anyone forgets and eats or drinks, let him complete his fast, for it is Allah who has fed him and given him drink." (Bukhari)
How to Fulfil Kaffarah
The prescribed expiation, in order of priority:
- Fast for 60 consecutive days — If one day is missed (without valid excuse), the count restarts from zero
- Feed 60 poor people — If unable to fast for 60 days due to health or age, feed 60 people one meal each. This equates to approximately £300 per day of fast deliberately broken
Kaffarah vs Fidya — Key Differences
Fidya is for those who cannot fast (approximately £5/day). Kaffarah is for those who deliberately broke a fast (£300/day or 60 days of fasting). The difference reflects the severity of the violation.
