ليلة القدر

Laylatul Qadr

🔊 Pronunciation: LAY-la-tul QA-dr

The Night of Power, the most blessed night of the year when the Quran was first revealed.

Laylatul Qadr (the Night of Power, also called the Night of Decree) is the single most significant night in the Islamic calendar. It is the night on which the Holy Quran was first revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The Quran devotes an entire surah (Chapter 97) to its description.

Better Than a Thousand Months

Allah describes Laylatul Qadr as "better than a thousand months" (Quran 97:3). This means that worship, prayer, charity, and good deeds performed on this single night carry more reward than doing them consistently for over 83 years. This is one of the most extraordinary blessings Allah has given to the Muslim nation.

When Is Laylatul Qadr?

The exact date is deliberately hidden to encourage worship throughout Ramadan. However, the Prophet (peace be upon him) gave guidance: "Seek Laylatul Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan." (Bukhari). The most commonly identified nights are the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, and 29th nights.

Signs of Laylatul Qadr include a peaceful, calm night, neither too hot nor too cold, and the sun rising the next morning without strong rays.

How to Maximise Laylatul Qadr

  • Night prayer (Qiyam al-Layl) — Extended voluntary prayers throughout the night
  • Quran recitation — Immerse yourself in the words of Allah
  • Dua (supplication) — The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught Aisha to pray: "O Allah, You are the One who pardons greatly, and You love to pardon, so pardon me."
  • Charity — Give generously, as charity on this night is multiplied beyond imagination
  • Dhikr — Remembrance of Allah through tasbeeh and istighfar

Daily Giving and Laylatul Qadr

Since nobody knows the exact night, many Muslims use Daily Giving — donating every single day of Ramadan — to guarantee their charity falls on Laylatul Qadr. This way, your donation on this blessed night alone is worth more than 83 years of giving.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Seek Laylatul Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan. (Bukhari)
