Nisab

🔊 Pronunciation: ni-SAAB

The minimum threshold of wealth above which Zakat becomes obligatory.

Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must possess before Zakat becomes obligatory upon them. If your total qualifying wealth falls below the Nisab threshold, you are not required to pay Zakat — and may in fact be eligible to receive it.

How Is Nisab Calculated?

Nisab is defined by the Prophet (peace be upon him) using two standards:

  • Gold Nisab: 87.48 grams of gold (approximately 7.5 tola or 3 troy ounces)
  • Silver Nisab: 612.36 grams of silver (approximately 52.5 tola)

In practice, most scholars recommend using the silver standard as it results in a lower threshold, meaning more people qualify to pay Zakat and more wealth is redistributed to those in need.

Nisab in UK Pounds (2026 Estimates)

Based on current market prices:

  • Gold Nisab: Approximately £4,800-£5,200 (fluctuates with gold prices)
  • Silver Nisab: Approximately £350-£450 (fluctuates with silver prices)

Because the silver Nisab is significantly lower, following the silver standard means that most working Muslims in the UK will meet the threshold and be required to pay Zakat.

When to Calculate Against Nisab

You calculate your Zakat on a specific date each year (your "Zakat anniversary" or "Hawl date"). On that date, you assess whether your total qualifying wealth exceeds the Nisab. If it does, you pay 2.5% of the total amount. Many Muslims choose a Ramadan date for easier remembrance and to benefit from multiplied rewards.
