Sadaqah

🔊 Pronunciation: sa-DA-qa

Voluntary charity given out of compassion, love, friendship, or generosity.

Sadaqah is voluntary charity given freely out of the goodness of one's heart, without any obligation. Unlike Zakat, which is mandatory and has specific rules, Sadaqah has no minimum amount, no specific timing, and no restrictions on who can receive it.

Sadaqah Beyond Money

One of the beautiful aspects of Sadaqah is that it extends far beyond financial giving. The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught that every act of goodness is Sadaqah:

  • A smile — "Your smile for your brother is Sadaqah" (Tirmidhi)
  • Removing harm from the road — Picking up litter or clearing obstacles
  • A kind word — Speaking gently and encouragingly
  • Sharing knowledge — Teaching someone something beneficial
  • Visiting the sick — Checking on those who are unwell

The Spiritual Benefits of Sadaqah

Sadaqah carries immense spiritual rewards. It extinguishes sin as water extinguishes fire, provides shade on the Day of Judgement, and serves as a cure for illness. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Give charity without delay, for it stands in the way of calamity." (Tirmidhi)

Importantly, Sadaqah does not decrease wealth. Rather, Allah replaces and multiplies what is given: "Whatever you spend in charity, He will replace it. And He is the Best of Providers." (Quran 34:39)

Sadaqah During Ramadan

While Sadaqah can be given at any time, giving during Ramadan multiplies the rewards manifold. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was the most generous during Ramadan, and many Muslims follow this example by increasing their charitable giving. Popular forms include food packs, iftar meals, and contributions to ongoing projects like Sadaqah Jariyah.

Sadaqah vs Sadaqah Jariyah

While regular Sadaqah provides immediate benefit (e.g., a meal), Sadaqah Jariyah is ongoing charity that continues to benefit people — and earn you rewards — long after the initial act. Examples include water wells, mosques, and educational institutions.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Charity does not decrease wealth. (Muslim)
