Can I add Gift Aid?

You need to pay enough UK Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax to cover the Gift Aid claimed by all the charities and Community Amateur Sports Clubs you support in each tax year.

For example, £100 of Gift Aided donations needs at least £25 of qualifying tax. VAT and Council Tax do not count.

These questions offer guidance. They do not check your tax records or replace the declaration.

1. Is this your own personal donation?
2. Have you paid, or will you pay, enough qualifying UK tax for the relevant tax year?

Can I add Gift Aid to a bank transfer?

Yes, if it is an eligible personal donation and you meet the qualifying UK tax requirement. Complete your declaration here. A payment reference and the name used on the transfer, if different, can help us locate the donation. This form does not make another payment.

How do I add Gift Aid to a cash donation?

Complete the declaration with your own details and choose Cash in the optional donation details. If you remember the collection location, event or person you gave the money to, include that information. Our team checks the donation records before claiming. Do not declare money collected from other people as your own.

What if I cannot remember my donation reference or exact date?

You can leave the optional matching details blank. An approximate date or collection location may still help our team find your donation. If you choose a declaration for one specific donation, its amount and actual date are required. Contact us if you need help.

I donated through the website. Do I need this form?

Gift Aid is offered during website checkout. If you already selected it, you normally do not need another declaration for that donation. Use this page if you missed it or need to request an update or cancellation. If you are unsure what was recorded, contact our Gift Aid team.

Does choosing cash or bank transfer limit my declaration to that method?

No. The optional donation details help us identify a donation. Your separate coverage choice determines which eligible personal donations to Muslims In Need your declaration covers.

What is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid lets a charity reclaim basic-rate tax on an eligible personal donation. For each £1 donated, the charity can claim 25p. You must give a declaration and pay enough qualifying UK tax.

Does Gift Aid cost me anything?

It does not cost you extra if you have paid enough UK Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax to cover the Gift Aid claimed on all your donations in that tax year. If there is a shortfall, you are responsible for paying the difference.

Why is Gift Aid 25% when basic-rate tax is 20%?

A £100 donation is treated as £125 before basic-rate tax: 20% of £125 is £25. Reclaiming that £25 increases the £100 donation by 25%.

Can pensioners add Gift Aid?

Yes, if they pay enough qualifying UK Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax. Being retired does not decide eligibility. Someone whose income is entirely within their tax-free allowance may not pay enough tax. Check your own position before declaring.

What if I am not a taxpayer or do not pay enough tax?

You can still donate, but should not add Gift Aid unless you meet the qualifying tax requirement. If an existing declaration is affected, tell our Gift Aid team and identify any tax years where you did not pay enough tax.

Can I add Gift Aid to a donation I already made?

A declaration can cover eligible donations made in the previous four years. Choose the appropriate coverage in the form and only include periods when you paid enough qualifying UK tax. Our team checks donation records before making a claim.

Does one declaration cover every charity I support?

No. Make a declaration for each charity. When checking whether you paid enough tax, include the Gift Aid claimed by all charities and Community Amateur Sports Clubs you support.

Can I add Gift Aid to a monthly donation?

Yes, if eligible. A declaration covering future donations can apply to your ongoing personal donations to Muslims In Need. Tell us if your tax circumstances or home address change.

Can I add Gift Aid to money I collected from other people?

Do not declare other people’s donations as your own. Individual donors need to provide their own declarations where eligible. Contact our fundraising team for help with sponsorship or collections.

Can I use Gift Aid if I live outside the UK?

You may qualify if you pay enough UK Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax. Foreign tax alone does not qualify. Select your actual place of residence so we record your home address correctly.

Can higher-rate taxpayers claim additional relief?

You may be able to claim personal tax relief above the basic rate through Self Assessment or by asking HMRC to adjust your tax code. This is separate from the charity’s Gift Aid claim. See the official guidance for your circumstances, including Scottish tax rates.

How do I change or cancel my Gift Aid declaration?

Choose “Update my details” or “Request cancellation” in the form. Give your existing reference if available and explain the change. The team will verify the request and update its records. A request does not automatically rewrite past declarations or reverse previous claims.

Why do you need my home address?

HMRC requires a donor’s full name and home address as part of a Gift Aid declaration. Use your home address rather than a workplace or the charity’s address.
