Can You Give Qurbani for a Loved One? Scholarly Ruling

By Sheikh Ibrahim Mogra • 6 April 2026 • 1,500 words

Yes, the majority of scholars agree that Qurbani can be offered on behalf of loved ones who have passed away - parents, relatives, and spouses. The reward reaches them as an act of charity.

Can You Give Qurbani on Behalf of the Dead?

Yes. The majority of Islamic scholars agree that Qurbani can be offered on behalf of loved ones who have passed away. The reward of the sacrifice reaches the departed as an act of charity (Sadaqah) performed on their behalf.

Scholarly Evidence

The permissibility is based on several evidences:

  • The Prophet (peace be upon him) sacrificed a ram and said: “O Allah, this is on behalf of Muhammad and the family of Muhammad.” (Abu Dawud). Scholars note this included departed members of his family.
  • Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) used to sacrifice two rams - one for himself and one on behalf of the Prophet (peace be upon him) after his passing.
  • The general principle that the reward of good deeds (Sadaqah, dua, Hajj) can benefit the departed is established in authentic hadith.

How to Give Qurbani for a Loved One

  1. Make the intention (niyyah) that this Qurbani is on behalf of your loved one.
  2. You may combine this with your own Qurbani - i.e., give one for yourself and one for a loved one separately.
  3. With Muslims In Need, use our Gift a Qurbani page and select "Loved One" as the recipient type. Enter their name so it is recorded in the order.

Is Qurbani for a Loved One Obligatory?

No. Qurbani on behalf of a loved one is voluntary and a beautiful act of love and charity. The obligation of Qurbani falls on the living. However, if the departed left a bequest (wasiyyah) requesting Qurbani, the executor should fulfil it from the estate.

Common Questions

Can I give one Qurbani for multiple loved ones?

Does the loved one need to have been Muslim?

Yes. Qurbani is an act of Islamic worship, and its reward can only benefit a Muslim who has passed away.
