Understanding Sadaqah Jariyah
Sadaqah Jariyah (ongoing charity) is a form of charity whose benefit continues to flow after the initial act. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “When a person dies, their deeds come to an end except for three: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, and a righteous child who prays for them.” (Muslim)
Is Qurbani a Sadaqah Jariyah?
Qurbani itself is not typically classified as Sadaqah Jariyah because the meat is consumed immediately - its material benefit does not continue indefinitely. However, the spiritual reward from following the Sunnah, feeding the poor, and reviving the tradition of Ibrahim (peace be upon him) is immense and recorded with Allah.
How to Combine Qurbani with Sadaqah Jariyah
If you want to maximise your impact during Eid al-Adha, consider combining your Qurbani with a genuine Sadaqah Jariyah project:
- Water well: Provide clean water that benefits communities for years.
- Orphan sponsorship: Monthly support that transforms a child’s life.
- Masjid construction: Every prayer performed in it earns you reward.
- Education: Knowledge that benefits others is ongoing charity.

The Reward of Animal Sacrifice
While not Sadaqah Jariyah in the technical sense, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said about Qurbani: “There is nothing dearer to Allah during the days of sacrifice than the sacrificing of animals. The sacrificed animal shall come on the Day of Judgement with its horns, hair, and hooves. The sacrifice is accepted by Allah before the blood reaches the ground.” (Tirmidhi)
