The First 10 Days of Dhul Hijjah: Virtues and How to Maximise Reward

By Sheikh Ibrahim Mogra • 10 April 2026 • 2,000 words

The first 10 days of Dhul Hijjah are the most virtuous days of the year. The Prophet said good deeds in these days are more beloved to Allah than good deeds at any other time.

The Most Blessed Days of the Year

The first ten days of Dhul Hijjah are the most virtuous days in the entire Islamic calendar. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days.” (Bukhari)

Allah swears by these days in the Quran: “By the dawn. And by the ten nights.” (Quran 89:1-2). Ibn Abbas, Ibn az-Zubayr, and Mujahid all interpreted “the ten nights” as the first ten nights of Dhul Hijjah.

What to Do During These 10 Days

1. Increase Dhikr

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “There are no days that are greater before Allah and in which deeds are more beloved to Him than these ten days. So increase your Tahleel (saying La ilaha illallah), Takbeer (saying Allahu Akbar), and Tahmeed (saying Alhamdulillah).” (Ahmad)

2. Fast the First Nine Days

It is recommended to fast during the first nine days, especially the Day of Arafah (9th Dhul Hijjah). Fasting on the 10th (Eid day) is prohibited.

3. Perform Qurbani

Secure your Qurbani during these blessed days. The sacrifice itself is performed on the 10th–12th, but giving early shows eagerness for this great act of worship.

4. Give Charity

Good deeds are multiplied during these days. Consider giving Sadaqah, sponsoring an orphan, or contributing to a water well alongside your Qurbani.

5. Read Quran

Increase your Quran recitation. The reward for every letter is multiplied many times over during these blessed days.

6. Make Sincere Dua

The dua on the Day of Arafah is the most powerful dua of the year. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “The best dua is the dua on the Day of Arafah.” (Tirmidhi)

The Takbeer of Dhul Hijjah

From the 1st of Dhul Hijjah, Muslims should recite the unrestricted Takbeer: “Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illallah, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, wa lillahil-hamd.”

From the Fajr of the 9th until the Asr of the 13th, the restricted Takbeer (after every obligatory prayer) becomes wajib according to the Hanafi school.
