Takbeer at-Tashreeq

The Takbeer at-Tashreeq is the recitation of "Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illallah, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, wa lillahil-hamd" after every obligatory prayer from the Fajr of the 9th Dhul Hijjah (Day of Arafah) until the Asr of the 13th Dhul Hijjah. It is wajib (obligatory) according to the Hanafi school.

The Takbeer in Full

The Takbeer at-Tashreeq in its most commonly recited form is: “Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illallah, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, wa lillahil-hamd.” (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, there is no god but Allah, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, and all praise belongs to Allah.)

When to Recite

There are two types of Takbeer during Dhul Hijjah:

  • Unrestricted Takbeer: From the 1st of Dhul Hijjah until the end of the 13th. This can be recited at any time - while walking, at home, in the market, or after voluntary prayers.
  • Restricted Takbeer (Takbeer at-Tashreeq): From the Fajr prayer of the 9th (Day of Arafah) until the Asr prayer of the 13th Dhul Hijjah. This is recited immediately after every obligatory prayer. According to the Hanafi school, this is wajib (obligatory).

Scholarly Consensus

All four schools of thought agree on the practice of Takbeer during these days, though they differ on whether the restricted Takbeer is wajib or Sunnah. The safest position is to observe it consistently after every fard prayer during the prescribed period.

Practical Advice

Set a reminder for the Fajr of 9th Dhul Hijjah to begin your Takbeer. Many mosques in the UK will announce the start date. Even if praying alone at home, recite the Takbeer audibly after completing your salah.
