Nahr (Day of Sacrifice)

Nahr refers specifically to the slaughter of a camel by cutting the throat while the animal is standing. More broadly, Yawm an-Nahr (the Day of Nahr) is another name for the 10th of Dhul Hijjah - the first day of Eid al-Adha. It is considered the greatest day of the year. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The greatest day in the sight of Allah is the Day of Nahr."

The Day of Nahr in Detail

Yawm an-Nahr (the Day of Sacrifice) is the 10th of Dhul Hijjah - the first day of Eid al-Adha. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “The greatest day in the sight of Allah is the Day of Nahr, then the Day of Qarr (the day after, 11th).” (Abu Dawud, authenticated by Al-Albani)

What Happens on Yawm an-Nahr

On this day, Muslims worldwide:

  • Perform the Eid prayer in congregation
  • Offer their Qurbani after the prayer
  • Recite the Takbeer after every prayer
  • Celebrate with family, share meals, and give gifts

For pilgrims at Hajj, Yawm an-Nahr involves: pelting the Jamarat al-Aqabah, offering the Hady sacrifice, shaving or trimming hair, and performing Tawaf al-Ifadah.

The Technical Meaning of Nahr

The word nahr specifically refers to slaughtering a camel by cutting the throat at the base of the neck while the animal is standing, with its left leg tied. This is distinct from dhabh (slaughtering sheep, goats, and cows by laying them down). Both methods are considered valid Shariah-compliant slaughter when performed with Bismillah and Takbeer.
