Qurbani (Udhiyah)

Qurbani (also known as Udhiyah in Arabic) is the ritual sacrifice of a livestock animal during the days of Eid al-Adha (10th-12th Dhul Hijjah). It commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) to sacrifice his son Ismail in obedience to Allah. The meat is distributed to the poor, relatives, and neighbours. According to the Hanafi school, it is wajib (obligatory) on every sane Muslim adult who possesses wealth above the Nisab threshold. According to the Shafi school, it is Sunnah mu'akkadah (strongly recommended).
