The Days of Tashreeq are the 11th, 12th, and 13th of Dhul Hijjah. During these days, the Takbeer at-Tashreeq is recited after every obligatory prayer. Qurbani can be performed on the 10th, 11th, and 12th of Dhul Hijjah. Fasting is prohibited during these days. The word "tashreeq" comes from the practice of drying meat in the sun after the sacrifice.
Understanding the Days of Tashreeq
The Days of Tashreeq are the 11th, 12th, and 13th of Dhul Hijjah, immediately following Eid al-Adha. The word “tashreeq” literally means “to dry meat in the sun” - a reference to the traditional practice of preserving the meat from the Eid sacrifice.
Rulings During Tashreeq
- Takbeer: The Takbeer at-Tashreeq is recited after every obligatory prayer from the Fajr of the 9th until the Asr of the 13th Dhul Hijjah.
- Fasting: Fasting is prohibited during these days. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “The Days of Tashreeq are days of eating, drinking, and remembrance of Allah.” (Muslim)
- Qurbani: The sacrifice can still be performed on the 11th and 12th (but not the 13th according to the majority). This gives a total window of three days for Qurbani.
Spiritual Significance
These days are an extension of the Eid celebration. The Prophet (peace be upon him) described them as days of joy and gratitude. Muslims are encouraged to continue making dhikr, sharing meals, visiting family, and distributing meat from their sacrifice.
