When is Eid al-Adha 2026?
Eid al-Adha 2026 is expected to fall on the evening of Tuesday 26 May 2026, corresponding to the 10th of Dhul Hijjah 1447 AH. This date is based on astronomical calculations, but the confirmed date will depend on the moon sighting of Dhul Hijjah in your locality.
In the UK, major organisations including the Islamic scholars and mosques will announce the confirmed date after the sighting of the new moon at the start of Dhul Hijjah. Most UK mosques follow Saudi Arabia’s moon sighting, while some follow local (Moroccan) sighting.
When Can Qurbani Be Performed?
Qurbani must be performed after the Eid prayer on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah. The window extends until sunset on the 12th of Dhul Hijjah (the Days of Tashreeq). Any animal sacrificed before the Eid prayer is considered a voluntary charity (Sadaqah), not a valid Qurbani.
In 2026, this means the Qurbani window is expected to be from Wednesday 27 May to Friday 29 May. If you are booking through a charity, it is best to give well in advance to ensure your sacrifice is performed on time.
Moon Sighting in the UK
The UK has two main approaches to determining Islamic dates:
- Global sighting: Following the announcement from Saudi Arabia. Most UK Muslims and major charities use this method.
- Local sighting: Following the actual sighting of the moon from the UK or Morocco. This can sometimes result in a one-day difference.
Muslims In Need follows the global sighting to ensure Qurbani is performed on the correct day across all 27 countries. We recommend giving early regardless of which sighting method you follow.
